Royal Mail CEO reveals parcel growth needs to double the decline in letters

Royal Mail recently published their half year results for the 6 months ending September 29th and the top line figures are solid if not stellar. As has been the case for many years, the decline in letters volume is being replaced by an increase in parcel volume brought about by the ever-growing popularity of ecommerce. 

In that context, Royal Mail CEO Rico Back’s commentary on the release was revealing.

A huge week for PUDO

Doddle & Australia Post launch

We’ve been sitting on this one a while, but we can finally talk about our partnership with Australia Post. They’re the dominant carrier in Australia and one of the most progressive Posts I’ve come across, so it’s absolutely great to be partnering with  them to put PUDO at the heart of their ecommerce strategy going forward. As a result of the deal,  we now power the largest collection and returns network in Australia – AP has a network of 4,300 post offices and 350 locker locations – to which we’re adding in thousands more new locations in supermarkets, department stores, pharmacies and petrol stations.

What is PUDO?

PUDO, or pick-up and drop-off, refers to any kind of designated area for consumers to receive and leave parcels, typically picking up ecommerce orders and dropping off returns. Broadly, PUDO locations are either staffed counters opened in existing businesses, or unstaffed lockers which can be located anywhere.
