Are Global Data’s £10bn C&C market predictions too conservative?

New data released by Global Data predicts that the rapidly growing click & collect market in the UK is far from its peak, with the sector set to grow by 45.8% over the next five years to reach £9.8 billion by 2023.

According to the report, clothing remains the key driver of growth accounting for well over half 59.9% of total click & collect spend in 2018. At a time of falling high street footfall, the report also highlights the role click & collect can play in driving valuable footfall with 39.2% of collecting customers going on to buy an additional item.

Our feeling is that Global Data’s figures, though huge, are still on the conservative side.  We would say that wouldn’t we?  But we say that for a few key reasons:

1. The report is based on consumer rather than retail data and our conversations with retailers tell us there’s a far greater sea change at work

2. The report itself highlights the increasing number of multichannel retailers taking their lead from brands like Next and providing click & collect propositions to rival the speed and cost of home delivery.

We predict this will have a far greater impact than anticipated here. Three quarters (74%) of UK shoppers admit to just ‘automatically choosing’ home delivery (Doddle YouGov research, 2019).  The increasingly common incentivisation of click & collect services could have a seismic impact if it breaks the habitual behaviour of just a quarter of those shoppers

3. In a significant shift, over three quarters (77%) of consumers now say they’re conscious of, or care deeply about the environment when thinking about how they receive their deliveries (Metapack, 2018).  If that motivation starts translating into behaviour the shift from home delivery to click & collect services could be huge over the coming five years
